Your Silence Was Treason
These lyrics were born out of fury. In the 2024 election, an estimated 89 million eligible Americans—about 36% of the voting-age population—did not vote. Among them were staggering numbers of young adults and women, many of whom either stayed home or voted against their own best interests.
According to post-election surveys, women under 30 voted for Kamala Harris by a 24-point margin, but men under 30 voted for Donald Trump by 16 points. And while 66.9% of women voted overall, that still means tens of millions didn’t. Worse yet, a significant number of women cast their ballots for the very party that stripped away their reproductive rights.
We could have had it all. Instead, we’re left with chains—again.
This song is a reckoning. A warning. A lament for the young women who don’t yet know what life was like before 1974. But they’re about to find out. Good luck with that.
Verse
Deep within our nature
Lies the spirit of defiance
Women caged by customs
Are forced into compliance
Sanger, Goldman, Stanton
Were the ones who paved the way
They were ridiculed and jailed
So we could have a say
Chorus
No gods, no masters their battle cry
They scream at what we’ve lost
Your silence at the ballot box
We paid the final cost
Your silence wasn’t sacred
It was treason in disguise
Now liberty lies bleeding
While apathy survives
Verse
Then came our chance in ‘24
To finally take the reins
While lives hung in the balance
You put us back in chains
You think it doesn’t matter
That this is just a game
But your silence doomed us
Your apathy’s to blame
Bridge
If you didn’t vote
You should feel the shame
You’ve doomed us all to servitude
And lives not fully led
To nightmares of the Handmaid’s Tale
Till most of us are dead
Outro
But even ghosts can rise again
Like Phoenix from the flames
If we reclaim their spirits
And dare to speak their names
It’s not too late to haunt the halls
Where justice used to reign
We are the echo, not the end
The fury in the chain
