March of the Red Hats
About a week after the “No Kings” rally on October 18, 2025, I woke up with a vivid image and a snippet of a song that had aired on television in 1975 from the educational program “Schoolhouse Rock”. As I watched it again on YouTube, I thought, “my god, how we’ve changed as a country.” I imagined George Washington giving us the stink eye and growling “you had ONE job!”.
I knew I had to find a way to weave the story of our American Revolution to how quickly so many Americans are willing to throw it all away. This is the result of that weaving.
Verse
When Britain taxed the colonists, still they wanted more
They claimed it paid for their defense in a prior war
The colonists grew angry and refused to pay
Old King George was frantic and said, “you must obey!”
Chorus
How we’ve changed our battle cry
From “No more kings” to “Crown him high”
From waging war for independence
To giving freedom its own death sentence
Verse
King George sent his British troops to occupy the town
To clamp down on the radicals and force them to bow down
When the colonists fought back five were left for dead
This only drove the township to dump their tea instead
Chorus
How we’ve changed our battle cry
From “No more kings” to “Crown him high”
From waging war for independence
To giving freedom its own death sentence
Verse
For the first one hundred years the people clashed and cried
Some fought a war to keep their slaves while others fought to free them
It took another hundred years to get everyone their rights
But now the clock runs backwards unless your male and white
Bridge
Red coats marched with muskets drawn
Red hats cheer while rights are gone
Rebels fought against the king
Red coats to red hats, same old thing
We must be rebels once again
To end this tyranny of men
Chorus
How we’ve changed our battle cry
From “No more kings” to “Crown him high”
From waging war for independence
To giving freedom its own death sentence
Outro
They wanted no more kings
Why not join them in their cry
Though they aren’t with us now
Their spirits are alive
The fight’s not lost, it’s just begun
The king will fall if we don’t run
