Numb to the Lies

This is an unapologetic protest song written in the aftermath of Roe v. Wade’s overturning. It gives voice to the disillusionment, fury, and exhaustion felt by so many—exhaustion from hearing empty promises, and pain from watching hard-won rights stripped away. I don’t want this to be just a lament. I want it to be a call to arms.

It’s a reminder of the horrors women endured before they had a choice and a pointed admonishment of those who, over generations, have upheld the very systems that enslave us.

Women who teach submission as virtue, who pass down patriarchal rules as sacred truth, have betrayed us. Whether out of fear, ignorance, or misguided faith, they’ve helped bind the chains we’re still fighting to break.

This song is for the fighters. For those who refuse to forget. For those who will not be silenced.

Verse
We fought for our rights in 73
We fought and won the right to be
Our daughters’ futures lie in waste
While old men legislate in haste

Chorus
They want us dead or under their thumb
We let them do it because we are numb
Numb to the cries of our mothers before us
Numb to the lies that the preachers have told us
When will women stop being fools?
Stop playing by the patriarchal rules

Verse
Women bleed and no laws will refute
Doctor’s now fear the court’s pursuit
Old men smirk as our daughters fade
Control is assured by the lies they’ve made

Chorus
They want us dead or under their thumb
We let them do it because we are numb
Numb to the cries of our mothers before us
Numb to the lies that the preachers have told us
When will women stop being fools?
Stop playing by the patriarchal rules

Verse
No matter what we do or say
Our rights will always be taken away
Some call it life, we call it law
But there’s no mercy in what we saw

Chorus
They want us dead or under their thumb
We let them do it because we are numb
Numb to the cries of our mothers before us
Numb to the lies that the preachers have told us
When will women stop being fools?
Stop playing by the patriarchal rules

Verse
While women die in the gathering storm
False tears are shed for the unborn
But no one really gives a damn
Women reduced to handmaids again

Bridge
I was raised in the land of the free
But all of that has been stolen from me
Get that fucking flag out of my face
Your countless lies are a disgrace

Outro
So many women died before
I remember the stories and tears
The coat hanger horrors and back-alley fears
I thought we’d never relive it again
But now it’s even worse, the cruelest law, a fatal flaw
What was once a blessing is now a curse
They’ve got us in full reverse
When will women stop being fools?
Stop playing by the patriarchal rules
