The Last God Standing

In these lyrics, I examine the principle of the “god of the gaps” which all theists prefer, no matter how small that gap is, to fill it with their imagined god. Many centuries ago, when thunder split the sky or illness struck without warning, people turned to gods to explain the unknown. These divine placeholders filled the vast gaps in human understanding. Lightning was Zeus, Thor, or any number of imagined deities, plague was punishment, and creation was a sacred breath. But as science expanded, those gaps began to shrink. The gods, once mighty, now stand on crumbling altars, displaced by data, reason, and discovery.

At the final moment when science reveals all, which god will be left? Or will there finally be no need for any gods? Can humans evolve past the need for mythology and embrace the philosophy of secular humanism? A philosophy that uplifts us all, not apart from all living creatures on earth, but as an intricate part of the beautiful tapestry of life in the universe.

Verse
Zeus, the ancient god of lore
Threw down a thunderbolt
But Norse tales spoke of their god Thor
Whose battles gave that fiery jolt
Today we know that certain clouds
With conflicts deep within their frames
Will ionize the air and split the sky with flames

Chorus
Gods were shaped to fill a void
A lack of understanding
But most of them are unemployed
While science is expanding
The gaps keep getting smaller
And gods are shrinking daily
When science finds the final clue
Which god will be left standing?

Verse
It was believed that women
Had magic in their wombs
Then came the patriarchy
Which quickly brought their doom
Today we know how we evolved
Through natural selection
No need for gods to birth their spawn
Just time and change and life moves on

Bridge
The ancient gods of mystery
Undone by curiosity
The Christian God fared just as well
And so he doomed us all to hell
But alas, his altar cracked
By science, truth and just plain facts
So he dodges, moves, and shakes
And we learn from our mistakes

Outro
Science brought us healing
Without the need for prayers
We touched the moon
We mapped the gene
We left the gods in tears
We’ve found new understanding
Of earth, and sun, and stars
Yet still I sit here wondering
Which god will be left standing
